Who are we ?

Back in 2013, a franco-italian group of study called Giuristi in rete – Network of jurists –  was founded. Its goal was to shed some light on the legal circulations in Europe. Between 2013 and 2016 the research Network held workshops in Milan (Bocconi University), Paris (Sciences Po Law School) and Bordeaux (University of Bordeaux).

Its creators now want to launch a new project, i.e. The Making of Legal Knowledge, thus extending the original aim of Giuristi in rete.

The platform is run by European researchers working on the history of legal knowledge, on the history of legal education and law schools and on the history of legal studies.

Our project

This research platform seeks to account regularly for recent scientific activity in the field of the European history of legal knowledge, i.e. the history of actors in the legal field (professional jurists and laymen); the history of places of knowledge production and transmission (starting from law schools and courts); the history of legal practices (scholarly, political, social practices); the history of forms and tools (know-how, legal works, libraries, epistemological cultures) and the history of dissemination and circulation of legal knowledge over time and spaces.

It turns to historians and legal historians committed to comparative and transnational legal history, as well as to all scholars interested in the history of higher education and in the history of knowledge. This field of study is rapidly expanding. Many events are being planned and many studies are published. And these are enriched by the most recent contributions from cultural history, historical anthropology, social history of knowledges and also from quantitative methods.

This platform will include calls for paper, upcoming conferences, workshops and symposia, new publications (books, reviews and articles), updates on doctoral training programs and upcoming Ph.D defences, links to sources and virtual exhibitions, bibliographical references and interviews with actors in the field.

Our goals

The goals of this blog are as follows: (1) to centralize as much as possible information on current debates and ongoing projects in the field of history of legal knowledge in Europe, concerning in particular the history of legal education, academic cultures and law schools; (2) to publicize the works done in this field and contribute to a better understanding of normative trends, legal studies and practices in the history of European societies; (3) to federate a close-knit community of researchers working on the history of legal knowledge and legal cultures, actors, institutions, circulations and transmissions; (4) to contribute to equip this field of research with a theoretical framework and renewed methods, to develop new research hypothesis and to facilitate exchanges and discussions.

 La fabrique des savoirs juridiques

Qui sommes-nous ?

Prolongeant Giuristi in rete, réseau franco-italien fondé en 2013 sur les circulations juridiques en Europe (Université Bocconi, Ecole de droit de Sciences Po, Université de Bordeaux) qui a organisé plusieurs workshops entre 2013 et 2016, ce carnet de recherche souhaite rendre compte, de manière régulière, des recherches consacrées à l’histoire européenne des savoirs juridiques, c’est-à-dire à l’histoire de ses acteurs (professionnels et profanes), de ses lieux de production et de transmission (à commencer par les facultés de droit et les institutions judiciaires), de ses usages (savants, politiques, sociaux, etc.), de ses formes et ses outils (savoir-faire, écrits juridiques, bibliothèques, cultures épistémiques, etc.), de leurs disséminations et de leurs circulations dans l’espace et le temps.

Le blog est animé par des chercheurs européens investis dans le domaine de l’histoire des savoirs juridiques, des facultés de droit et la science juridique.

Projet

Ce carnet s’adresse aux historiens et aux juristes engagés dans une histoire transnationale et comparative du droit mais aussi à toutes les personnes intéressées par l’histoire de l’enseignement supérieur et des savoirs. Ce champ de recherche est actuellement en plein essor et connaît l’organisation de nombreuses manifestations et la publication de nombreux travaux, nourris des derniers apports de l’histoire culturelle, de l’anthropologie historique,  de l’histoire sociale des savoirs ou encore des méthodes quantitatives.

Ce carnet pourra accueillir les appels à communication, les annonces de conférences, de colloques, de publications (ouvrages, revues et articles), la présentation des actions de formation doctorale, les annonces de soutenances de thèses, la mise en lumière de sources, la réalisation d’expositions virtuelles, les informations bibliographiques ou encore des entretiens avec des acteurs de ce champ.

Objectifs

Les objectifs de ce blog sont les suivants : 1°) centraliser autant que possible toutes les informations sur les travaux et les initiatives scientifiques, à l’échelle européenne, intéressant l’histoire des savoirs juridiques, tout particulièrement à l’histoire des facultés de droit, de l’enseignement juridique et des cultures académiques ; 2°) rendre plus visible les travaux dans ce domaine pour contribuer à une compréhension renouvelée des phénomènes normatifs, de la science et des pratiques juridiques dans l’histoire des sociétés européennes ; 3°) tenter de fédérer la communauté des chercheurs travaillant sur l’histoire des cultures et des savoirs juridiques, sur leurs acteurs, leurs institutions, leurs circulations et leurs transmissions; 4°) contribuer à doter ce champ de recherche d’un cadre théorique et d’outils méthodologiques renouvelés, d’approfondir de nouvelles hypothèses de recherche et de favoriser les échanges et des débats à un niveau européen.
